Charlie Haylock and the story of the making of The Dig

14 September, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
£20.00
Charlie Haylock

Come and join us for a fascinating evening with Suffolk author and dialect expert Charlie Haylock who will take us behind the scenes of the Netflix hit film The Dig.

The movie tells the story of an unlikely hero, Basil Brown of Ipswich Museum, the self-taught archaeologist and modest man who discovered the Sutton Hoo treasure, the most magnificent ever found in this country.

It is an intriguing and sometimes hilarious look at The Dig.

Historian and author Charlie will explain how a potential “scam” email from the film producer turned out to real and was followed by a personal call from auctor Ralph Fiennes.

Charlie will show how Ralph Fiennes, who played Basil Brown, and the other “Suffolk” actors learnt their Suffolk accent and not sound like West Country pirates.

He will also explain the extreme lengths that Fiennes took not only to play Basil Brown…. but to become him.

It will be an informative and entertaining evening.

Charity founder Rob Brooks said: “Charlie Haylock has always supported our Cancer Care Woodlands donating funds from his book sales and informative and hilarious talks”.

“His upcoming talk at the Hold will help us develop our Ipswich Community Shed, a part of our charity, by contributing needed funds to expand our help for people living with life limiting problems or those who are affected by mental health issues.”

The evening is at The Hold on the evening of Thursday September 14, at 7pm.
