With joyful voices and festive spirit, our Sudbury volunteers organised a traditional wassailing celebration to honour and protect our native fruit trees.
Embracing the age-old custom, the volunteers gathered among the lush greenery to sing, dance, and offer blessings to the orchard, ensuring a healthy and abundant harvest in the coming seasons.
The event was filled with charm and cheer as participants sang the well-known carol, “Here we come a-wassailing among the leaves so green,” echoing through the woodlands. The volunteers also performed the customary rituals associated with wassailing, including the symbolic pouring of cider at the base of the trees and the hanging of toast in the branches – both acts believed to ward off evil spirits and promote fruitful growth.
This lively celebration not only paid homage to ancient traditions but also highlighted the volunteers’ deep connection to the land and their commitment to preserving and nurturing the local environment. The wassailing event brought together the community, blending heritage with sustainability, and reinforcing the importance of caring for our natural surroundings.
Thanks to the efforts of our Sudbury volunteers, our native fruit trees have been blessed for another year, promising a bountiful harvest and continuing the cycle of growth, care, and community spirit that lies at the heart of all we do.
